Art in Adversity
Hello Everyone,
I just realized that it may be hard to get work started during these trying times and that some of us might need some extra structure from which to start. I know that some of us are feeling creatively stuck and uncertain. This happens, often to the most creative of people. When you have many gifts and ideas but are not sure where or how to focus them it can feel overwhelming and stifling. It can begin to feel like you don't know where to begin or that you are not sure that you have anything worthwhile to offer. Or, perhaps you see things happening in the world that seem so much larger and more important that you feel your creative contribution has no weight or worse, is privileged and self indulgent.
The fact that you raised these doubts and worries within our conversation in class today makes me proud of you. It shows that you have conscience, compassion, and are concerned that your actions are of consequence and have meaning in this time of need. Sometimes it is hard to know what are the questions to ask and what are the actions to take. As destructive as they might seem doubt and uncertainty are ever present components of the creative process. They can help to guide you so long as you don't let them overwhelm you.
If you are feeling stuck or lost, reach out to me. I will help you develop parameters that will help get you started. If you think that working collaboratively might be helpful, let me know and we will pair up with others who feel the same way. Now is a perfect time to work together.
My best,
Johnny
